The pill is a form of birth control that contains varying amounts of hormones singly or in combination and is taken on a prescribed schedule. The contraceptive patch and the contraceptive ring both release norelgestromin (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) to prevent pregnancy. The patch is applied to the skin, the ring is inserted into the vagina for three weeks at a time and removed during menstruation. Other forms include those that can be implanted under the skin (Norplant, Implanaon) or come in the form of an IUD that may or may not release hormones.
