I hope I am worrying needlessly, but I just wanted to ask this question. I was throwing a football around with the middle schoolers in our ministry and one of them threw the ball hard into my stomach when I wasn't looking, so I didn't block it at all. It hit me in the center just below my ribcage and really knocked the wind out of me for a couple minutes. I am 8 1/2 weeks pregnant. Does this pose any risk for the baby or does this put me at risk for miscarriage? TIA

Unless you're bleeding, cramping, or were to be on bed rest, you should be fine :) Baby is sooooo small and snug in there that it would take much more than a football. Think of the many women who survive car accidents and even plane crashes that have perfectly healthy babies. I even slid down the stairs once during my first pregnancy and took a spill with my second DS. You could call your OB just for peace of mind though.

I wouldn't think so. Sounds like the ball hit you much higher than where the baby is, plus at just 8.5 weeks the baby is still tucked low in your pelvis and well protected. As long as you're not having cramping and bleeding I'd think all was well.

Your uterus is still down in your pelvis (and will be for the next month).  Baring massive internal trauma, I doubt that a thump to the abdomen will have any effect at all.  Good Luck!

Nope. My toddler kicks A LOT in her sleep, and I'm 16 weeks. Things are progressing fine.

Agreeing with the others. Miscarriage from trauma is *extremely* uncommon in the first trimester. The uterus is still down so low that it pretty much cannot be damaged by you being hit in the stomach at 8 weeks. You would need to have an all-over sort of trauma (like being in a major car accident) to cause a miscarriage due to trauma at this point.

Baby will be just fine!

Thank you all so much for your reassuring words! I was pretty sure it wasn't a problem, but it is so nice to hear this reiterated from all of you!
