HI ladies,

I'm just curious, what was/were the first items you bought and how soon after that BFP?

I can't help but feel the itch to start shopping away but think it's too soon!Shrug

We got a crib, changing table and dresser, as well as travel system with stroller and car seat right around Thanksgiving, so probably around 6 months. Still in need of a lot of stuff!

We satisfied that itch by registering :)  We got a LOT of stuff at our baby showers, and then used gift cards for other items that folks didn't get us.  The main thing I remember buying ourselves were the cloth diapers.

If you're going to have a shower or two, I would wait until after then, and in the meantime you can have fun with the registry.  Most of our baby shopping was later in the 3rd trimester after we knew what others had gotten us :)

Ditto!

I think the one thing we bought was the going home outfit from the hospital. Traditionally, we bring home babies in yellow (for good luck) so it didn't matter if the baby was a boy or a girl.

The crib and dresser were our first purchases.  We knew no one would buy them for us so we figured it was safe to go ahead and buy them.

We didn't register until we knew the gender.  Also, the day we found out we were having a girl, I bought a cute pink outfit.

I'm not registered, and never expected anyone to throw me a baby shower - it is my fourth kid!  Turns out my friend is insisting on throwing me a shower, and it is next weekend - and I've already purchased everything we need.  Since it has been so long since we have had a baby, and it is our first girl; that turned out to be a lot.  We needed a new carseat, crib, stroller, clothes, etc.  I don't know what people will bring to the shower but I sincerely hope they don't spend too much - this baby already has a ton of clothes and everything she needs.

Anyway..the first thing that I bought was around 12 weeks and I bought a package of plain white onesies at Carter's.  I love onesies, my kids all wore them everyday under everything that they wore.  It was fun to purchase those.  Laugh

We purchased some onesies to surprise the grandmothers for Christmas...about a week after the BFP! Not much since then, trying to resist. I will say, however, that my mother has pretty much already done her nursery, paint and everything! She's so excited!

I think we bought the car seat and some clothes first.

The last thing we bought was a crib and mattress, and that was right around my due date. (don't ask.)

Most everything else we wanted (baby bjorn, clothing, a few toys, mattress pads, space saver high chair and a few sheets) we received at my baby showers. We bought cloth diapers in the 3rd trimester.

(We lived in a small space and did not purchase many "needed" baby items. No dresser/changing table (already had a dress that I just cleaned out), no glider (already had a lazyboy recliner that rocked), no exersaucer, swing, bumbo, bouncy seat, etc.

I wasn't really bit by the nesting bug for #1 or #2. Now, for #3, I have been wanting to nest since I pretty much found out I was pregnant. I'd be happy if I could purge and knit all day.

So, I'm trying to be really good by only buying what we need (I have a list) and buying on clearance until garage sale season comes. Target has had a bunch of stuff on clearance, and I don't mind buying brand new clothing for a $1 a piece.

We aren't really setting up a nursery, either. Once we know the sleeping habits of #3, we'll decide how to rearrange the kids and bedrooms, buy any needed furniture, and then decorate all the kids rooms.

I bought a few miscellaneous items at an amazing children's consignment sale sometime in late October or early November (so, I was maybe 15 weeks or so?). The prices were so good that I couldn't resist! That included: a boppy pillow w/ cover (only $10 for both!!), a swaddle, some receiving blankets, a play mat, a bonucy seat, a small tub, and a changing pad w/ cover.

Sine then, I've bought maybe one or two clothing items, a moby wrap, and some cloth diapers with a surprise "bonus" gift card I received from work. I also got some baby stuff for Christmas, including some more CD's and our car seat.

Other than that, I've been making a few things here and there (nursery art, cloth wipes, a ring sling...), I know my mom will be buying the crib (it's her "thing" to purchase the crib for all the grandkids :) ), and for everything else, I'll be doing what PP suggested and waiting until after the shower to see what we still need. I also agree that organizing the registry definitely helped satisfy the itch to start shopping!

We bought some unisex sleepers around the 3 month mark... then when we found out it was a boy, I went crazy for awhile buying clothes. It was really fun, but we have SO many clothes now as people seem to like gifting clothing, too.

We bought our crib bedding set about 2 YEARS! before we even started trying to get pregnant. I fell in love with it, and it was being discontinued and was on sale for about 75% off! The bargain shopper in me couldn't pass up such a good deal! Plus, it's gender-neutral, so I knew it would work no matter what gender we had.

The crib and dresser I've had my whole life (my grandad built it for my mom when she was pregnant with me), so it was just a matter of getting it from my parents' house and refinishing it. I also bought some clothes at a second-hand shop at around 10 weeks pregnant, and we were just given a huge load of baby stuff from friends who have twins.

As you note by my siggy, if I remembered how to turn it on, I am not yet expecting, but I have already started collecting things from other people for my hoped for munchkin. So far, she/he has several books, a couple of cds, a chair that looks like Pooh, play-doh, bubbles, sidewalk chalk and crayons ( it came from a little kid, I couldn't turn it down without breaking her heart), and a ton of stuffed animals that were mine when I was a kid. The only thing that has been purchased is a toy that my DP got when he was in England a year or so ago: a wooden caterpillar on wheels with a short string.

Until it's my turn to shop, i'm having fun helping my cousin, who is due in May pare down her list, and making a list of my own munchkin gear. Hope I get to share it soon!!

Congrats to all and Happy hatching to those in late Jan/early Feb. Your little one is almost ready to make his/her grand entrance!

I love this!!! If I had found something so perfect, and so cheap, before we had started trying, I probably wouldn't have been able to pass it up, either. What did your DH think when you came home with crib bedding? If it was 2 years before we started trying, my DH probably wouldn't have even cared how inexpensive it was - he would've been freaked Laugh

Also, love that your LO will have the same furniture that you had growing up. We're getting a new crib, but I'm going to refinish the dresser I had since I was a baby for the nursery Smile

We bought booties to gift to our parents for Christmas at exactly 4 weeks... 2 days after the BFP. At almost 6 weeks my SIL loaded up our van with all her hand-me-downs to bring back home with us. So we have a pack-n-play, swing, bouncy seat, jumper, a breast pump, burp cloths, a few gender-neutral clothes, etc. She helped in biting that bug to buy things that I had immediately! Now I just have to find a place to put all this stuff for the next 7 months, other than on my guest bed. Laugh

Britty,

Thankfully, my hubby is very laid back! We had been talking about starting a family ever since we first got married, so it wasn't like I sprung it on him, haha! Then I just threw it in the guest room closet, so I think he forgot about it until I actually got pregnant. Laugh

So far I've only bought a sleeper, and my mother in law has bought him a bib and bath towel.  We adopted my first DS at the age of one, so I never had any clothes under size 12 months for him, and since we found out what DD was while I was pregnant, we really didn't have much that was gender neutral for her.  So, other than plain white onesies, we're pretty much getting to start over on clothes.  I didn't want to go too crazy though, because I know my mom and mother in law, and they will both buy too much.  Plus a friend of mine has twin boys that will be nearly one when I have this little guy, and she has offered to let me go through all their old stuff.

As for other baby items, we still had most of what we needed from DD (although some of it is rather girlish - oh well!)  I'm not having a shower this time, but people threw showers for both of my previous two kids and, in my experience, people get annoyed if you don't have enough stuff on the registry.  So, I agree with the people who say to wait and see what you don't get at showers before buying too much.  I didn't want to put anything expensive on it, but then I found out some people wanted to go together on group gifts, so they wanted me to put some of the spendier things on the registry.

Wow! Thanks a lot for all the responses.

And I must say, I always thought I wanted to wait until after the showers to start buying anything like most of you advise. But then it feels like it's going to be a very long wait (my work shower will probably be during my last week of work (38wks) and my other one I'm still trying to convince my friend to do it around the 31/32wk mark and currently failingSad).

And I don't want to even do a registry because around here people ignore registries and buy whatever they want anyway so i feel it's a waste of time as it's not gonna be used (most people don't even do them as they don't know whether they will have showers or not as it's usually a surprise). And from the showers I've been to here at work, it looks like people usually go for clothing and toiletries. From my other shower I'm not really sure what I will get.

I don't want to go overboard or anything but would like to buy a few items just to satisfy my itch!!!!

But maybe i can keep myself busy by starting work on the nursery (painting and decorating), and maybe doing some window shopping for the big items (as I'm sure no one will buy those except maybe my mom???) to compare prices and see what I like! I'm definitely going to buy the going home outfit soon Smile

Thanks!

Andronica - I would also check out the book Baby Bargains! When you start window shopping, etc., thinking about everything you want/need gets a bit overwhelming. I found the book to be a big help; it helped me make final decisions on what I needed, what I didn't, and what brands were the best bets. You can pick it up pretty cheap on Amazon.

Have fun picking everything out and decorating the nursery! I just started getting my nursery ready; it's so fun watching it transform, and it's definitely making things feel more "real" Smile
