One of the most common questions women desiring pregnancy ask me is whether they should have sex every day or every other day. If you are charting, you know that there are only a few days per cycle in which you can even get pregnant. (Actually, if truth be told, even if you aren’t charting your cycles, there are still only a few days in which you can  conceive!) Regardless, the days that you should have intercourse will be a function of your combined fertility.

A woman will generally have fertile cervical fluid for several days. The most obvious and ideal type is usually clear, slippery and often stretchy, like raw eggwhite. If your partner’s sperm count is normal, you should have sex every day, but if it is low, you should have sex only every other day.

The critical point for all couples is to try to include the Peak Day, which is the last day of slippery egg-white cervical fluid or lubricative vaginal sensation. This day is considered the most fertile because it generally occurs either on the day you ovulate or the day before. Note that if you don’t observe eggwhite, you should try for the last day of the wettest-quality cervical fluid you produce.

As in the example below, then, if your partner’s sperm count is normal, you would have sex on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. But if it is low, abstain on Tuesday.

Sunday           Creamy

Monday          Eggwhite         Yes

Tuesday          Eggwhite         Yes         (Unless sperm count is low)

Wednesday    Eggwhite         Yes         (Peak Day)

Thursday        Sticky

Friday              Dry
